Part 2: The Venue Hunt, the Tight Budget, and the Magic of the Right Fit

When the idea of our 30-year high school reunion began to take shape

One of the biggest hurdles was—where in the world were we going to have it? A big dream with a small budget and a lot of hearts behind it meant we had to get creative, resourceful, and a little scrappy. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the right people always show up.

From the beginning, budget was the biggest factor in every decision.

We were all very aware that times were tough economically, and we wanted this reunion to be accessible to everyone. No steep ticket prices. No exclusive venues. We wanted laughter, music, memories, and connection—and we were determined to make it happen without breaking anyone’s bank.

Cue the road trips Jimmy (yes, our classmate—not to be confused with my husband Jim!)

Hopped in the car with me and we spent a few long afternoons checking out venues. Keli suggested The Stampede in Temecula, and we gave it a good look. We also toured the Hilton in Norco, strolled the absolutely gorgeous Farm in Norco, and scoped out Felipe. Jimmy helped me walk each space, gather info, imagine layouts, and capture every little detail so we could compare and choose wisely. His support during that process meant the world. It wasn’t just about finding a space—it was about reimagining the feeling we wanted our classmates to have when they walked in.

Huge Shout Out!

We also have to give a shout-out to Andrea from the Class of '92. Her gracious offer to let us use her beautiful property if we needed it. The year before, many of us had the chance to attend their reunion there—and let me tell you, we had an absolute blast. Her space was perfect for a gathering, and more than that, the night itself helped spark the initial conversations that eventually led to our own reunion coming to life. She also gave me the inspiration to start using classmate photos to build excitement—and it worked like a charm. Those early posts helped build momentum and remind everyone just how fun our crew could be.

Then there was Joel.

Oh, Joel.

Our honorary planning team member and all-around miracle worker. Not only did he rally classmates, chase down RSVPs, and help collect payments—he came through big time with our venue. As a proud veteran, Joel used his membership to help us lock in the American Legion. Not only did it check all the boxes, but it gave us a great deal. The price was right. The location was central. And the vibe? Exactly what we were going for.

The savings on the venue allowed us to put more into the experience—food, a DJ, a photo booth, and all the little touches that helped create the fun, relaxed energy we were hoping for.

We’re so grateful to Joel for his service—both to our country and to our class.

Looking back, it was almost serendipitous.

All the driving, the researching, the texting—it all led to the perfect place. We didn’t need chandeliers or ballrooms. We just needed space, good energy, and the right people to fill the room. And thanks to a lot of teamwork (and a few long car rides), that’s exactly what we found.

Smiling and waiting for everyone to show up—it was a blast seeing people walk in and say, “I’m here!”

This phase of the planning process reminded me how much I love this kind of work.

Coordinating details, touring spaces, solving puzzles—it lights me up. At the time, it didn’t have a name. I wasn’t thinking about branding or turning it into a thing. I just knew I cared deeply about making something special for the people I grew up with. And sometimes, that’s how the best ideas are born—without even realizing it.

This story is just getting started.

From finding the perfect venue to pulling together a heartfelt celebration, every step has been full of lessons, laughter, and love. Stay tuned for Part 3, where I’ll take you behind the scenes on how we created the mood, decorated the space, and brought the room to life—with just 30 minutes on the clock and a whole lot of teamwork. This is second chapter of a four-part series, and I’d love to have you along for the whole ride.
